The capacity to be alone and dating
Psychoanalyst, D.W. Winnicott was the first to discuss the individual's capacity to be alone. The capacity to be alone is a person's ability to take care of their own emotional needs. A person with the capacity to be alone does not need a partner to take care of them. The goal is to develop and strengthen the capacity to be alone. Once you reached this point, you are ready to date and be in a relationship. At this point, you have the ability to take care of your own needs and are not just looking for a partner to do this for you. I encourage you to work out this emotional muscle by taking yourself out to dinner, a movie, coffee, a stroll and do not drown yourself on your phone. Experiment sitting by yourself, observing and enjoying your surroundings and keep practicing until you feel comfortable by yourself and not lonely. You might enjoy your own company!
